Why do you have dry skin?

Before finding a solution to the problem, the principal step is to find out why do we have a problem? So let’s first know why do we have dry skin? The chief reason why dry skin occurs is because our skin is unable to retain enough moisture. This can be a result of frequently applying harsh soaps or face wash on our skin, aging or a certain medical situation. And for those who live in the colder region, cold dry winter air can be one of the reasons for the this. This is because the cold wind means low humidity, hence leading to dryness.

How can we get rid of dry flaky skin?

 Now as we know the reason for the occurrence of dry skin, why not find a solution to get rid of it. And say bye to dryness and welcome healthy, soft and moisturized skin with open arms.

Here are some ways to combat dry skin that are effective if practiced consistently ~

▶ Use a humidifier in winter, set it at a 60% level which is great to replenish and rejuvenate the top layer of the skin.

▶ Limit your bathing time to 5-10 minutes, and use lukewarm water instead of hot water, as excessive bathing and hot water strips away the essential layer of oils from our skin.

▶ Avoid using harsh soaps, if necessary consider moisturizing preparations or soap free cleansers.

▶ To avoid damaging your skin, stay away from bath sponges, scrub brushes and washcloths. Also don’t rub your face with the towel, just gently tap the towel on your skin.

▶ Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands. This helps plug the spaces between your skin cells and seal in moisture while your skin is still damp.

▶ Never ever scratch your skin, as moisturizer can control the itching.

How can you retain moisture in your skin?

Skin moisturizers, which rehydrate and nourish the top layer of the skin cells and seal in the moisture, is the chief step in combating dry thirsty skin. The moisturizers contain three main ingredients, Humectants, which help attract moisture, include ceramides (pronounced as ser-A-mids), glycerine, Sorbitol, Hyaluronic acid, and Lecithin. Another set of ingredients — for example, Petrolatum (petroleum jelly), Silicone, lanolin, and mineral oil — helps seal that moisture within the skin. Emollients, such as linoleum, Linolenic, and Lauric acids, smoothness skin by filling in the spaces between skin cells.

In general, the thicker and greasier a moisturizers, the more effective it will be. Some of the most effective and least expensive moisturizers are petroleum jelly and moisturizing oils (such as mineral oil). Because they contain no water, they’re best used while the skin is still damp from bathing, to seal in the moisture. Other moisturizers contain water as well as oil, in varying proportions. These are less greasy and may be more cosmetically appealing than petroleum jelly or oils.

Is dry skin a serious problem?

Dry skin is usually not a serious health problem, but it can produce serious complications, such as atopic dermatitis or chronic eczema (red patches) or bleeding from fissures that have become deep enough to disrupt capillaries in the dermis. Another possible complication is secondary bacterial infection (redness, swelling, and pus), which may require antibiotics. (Rarely, associated with allergy.)

When you experience the above mentioned dry skin problems, you must go and see a dermatologist. They will probably prescribe a cream containing lactic acid, urea, or corticosteroids.

These complications are most likely to occur when your skin’s normal protective mechanisms are severely compromised. For example, severely dry skin can cause deep cracks or fissures, which can open and bleed, providing an avenue for invading bacteria.

And one important thing, to keep your skin fresh and healthy is, that one should always use sunscreen, be it winters or summers, as it contains major hydrating and moisturizing properties.

How to know if you have dry skin?

  • A feeling of skin tightness after taking a shower or swimming.
  • Skin that looks and feel rough.
  • Light to severe itching (Puriritus)

What causes dry skin?

There is no single cause of dry skin. Dry skin causes can be classified as external and internal. External factors are the most common underlying cause and are the easiest to address. External factors include cold temperatures and low humidity, especially during the winter when central heaters are used. Internal factors include overall health, age, genetics, family history, and a personal history of other medical conditions. In particular, those with certain thyroid diseases are more prone to developing dry skin.

External factors that cause dry skin include:

  • over-washing with harsh soaps,
  • overuse of sanitizers and lipid solvents (alcohol),
  • cold temperature,
  • low humidity.

Although bathing and showering adds water to skin, it is the evaporation of this water after the completion of the immersion that results in dry skin. Skin that feels overly tight after bathing may indicate excess removal of water and natural layer of skin oils.

One of the most common factors causing dry skin is frequent application of harsh soaps. The type of soap may have a large impact on dry skin. Soap is an emulsifier that removes oils on the skin. The more often skin is scrubbed with soap, the more oil is removed, ultimately resulting in drier skin. Excessive use of soaps can worsen dry skin.

Moreover, dry skin may persist or worsen if using moisturizers improperly or choosing an inadequate moisturizer. Sometimes, the material of different clothing can also affect dry skin. Some materials such as wool or synthetic fibers tend to irritate the skin.

Dry skin condition may be caused by taking some medicines, as well. Some examples are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergy, and acne medications. Occasionally, a dry skin problem can be a sign of an internal medical condition. For instance, aging may inherently make people more prone to dry skin. In addition, eczema, psoriasis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and malnutrition are all associated with dry skin.

Your water and diet also plays a prominent role in your skin care. If your intake of water, fibers and minerals are not up to the mark, it will obviously result in dry unhealthy skin.  Hence, to improve the skin, one needs to recognize the root cause and then work upon it to get rid of it.
